There is a small blank wall in almost every house. It is above the coffee maker, behind the bottles, or over the washing machine, and it is too small for art and too visible to leave empty.

That wall is why coffee bar, home bar, and laundry room signs keep selling while the broader "farmhouse decor" category rises and falls. The rooms are small, the buyer knows exactly what the room is for, and all three tolerate a joke in a way a living room does not. Nobody hangs a punchline over the sofa. Everybody will hang one over the washer.

These are also the easiest projects to get technically wrong, because they are text-led. There is no illustration to hide behind. If the letterforms in the file are built badly, the sign is the file's failure standing on a shelf.

Why these three rooms outperform their size

A shopper browsing "home decor" is not really shopping. A shopper searching "coffee bar sign" has already decided, has a spot in mind, and is choosing between options rather than deciding whether to buy at all.

Small rooms also get redecorated on impulse. Repainting a living room is a project. Hanging one new sign over a coffee station is a Saturday whim that costs less than lunch, and it happens far more often.

The third reason is gifting. A coffee bar sign is the safe gift for someone whose taste you do not know, because the person either has a coffee corner or wishes they did. Home bar pieces carry the same logic for anyone who has ever been given a bottle of something nice.

The coffee bar

The home coffee station became its own decor niche somewhere around the espresso machine boom, and it has stayed. The buyer here is not the same person buying a general kitchen sign. They have a dedicated surface, usually a counter end or a cart, and they are decorating that surface as a set.

That last part is the commercial point. Coffee bar buyers rarely buy one item.

Wall plaques are the anchor. A small rectangular or arched board with a short line on it, hung or leaned against the backsplash. Keep the word count low, because the board is small and every word you add steals stroke width from the rest.

Canister and bean jar labels cut from permanent vinyl, in a matched set. Black on clear glass is the default for a reason: it suits every kitchen and it never dates.

Mug shelf tags and small hanging pieces in wood, at three or four inches, hung from the underside of a shelf. These use up offcuts and sell as add-ons.

Tiered tray pieces are the quiet volume item. A tray with three or four small coffee-themed shapes on it is a complete gift, and each shape takes almost no material.

The Coffee Bar Sayings Designs pack carries 30 layouts drawn for exactly these proportions, which matters more than it sounds: a saying composed for a wide sign does not simply shrink onto a tall plaque, it has to be recomposed line by line.

For a softer, more illustrated take, the Coffee Cup Cartoon Characters set runs to 30 character-led designs. Those suit vinyl on tumblers and children's-height decor better than a formal sign does, and they layer well in two or three colors.

Simple labels can coordinate with an ornate sign without repeating every flourish. These canisters hold food; keep cleaning products in their original labeled packaging.

The home bar

Bar pieces are bigger, bolder, and priced higher, and the design language is different. Coffee decor leans warm and handwritten. Bar decor leans toward badges, crests, and heavy slab lettering, closer to a pub sign than a kitchen one.

The main sign is usually a name. "The Smith Tavern" style pieces personalise easily and sell for several times what a generic phrase does, because there is exactly one buyer on earth for that name and they are already holding their card.

Coasters are the workhorse. A set of four or six from plywood, cork, or slate, engraved with matching designs. If you cut them nested from one sheet, the material cost per set is trivial.

Bottle openers and wall-mounted catchers pair with the sign to make a set. Wood-backed openers take engraving directly.

Glassware through a vinyl stencil and etching cream, or straight vinyl decals on the outside for anything that is not going in a dishwasher.

The Bar And Drink Designs pack is the broad one here at 70 designs, and Wine & Friends Designs covers the wine-specific half of the shelf with another 30. The two rarely compete: wine buyers and whiskey buyers decorate differently and know it.

One thing worth planning around: bar signs get hung on dark walls and behind glass more often than kitchen pieces do. High-contrast pairings hold up better there than subtle ones. A dark scorch on walnut looks rich in a photo and disappears in a dim corner of a basement bar.

The laundry room

Laundry room signs are the most underrated of the three, and the reason is that the room has no other decor competing for the wall. There is a washer, a dryer, a shelf, and a big flat blank space above them.

The humour also runs hotter here. Laundry is the chore nobody enjoys, so the phrasing that sells is the phrasing that admits it. Sorting jokes, "loads of fun" wordplay, and anything about the laundry pile being immortal all land.

The wall sign is the main event, and it can be larger than you would put in a coffee corner. There is space, and the room is read from the doorway rather than from arm's length.

Basket and shelf labels for towels, linens and cleaning supplies. Keep detergent, especially laundry packets, in its original labeled container rather than decanting it into decorative food-style jars.

Door signs and small hanging pieces for the door of a laundry closet, plus tags for baskets, which is a nice use for scrap.

The Laundry Room Sayings pack holds 47 designs across that whole range, from the short two-word plaque to the longer joke that needs a wide board.

Material choice deserves a moment. Humidity varies with ventilation and how the room is used. A suitable finish on both faces and the edges slows moisture exchange; it cannot stop wood movement or guarantee flatness. Apply vinyl to a smooth, fully cured compatible finish and test adhesion first. The US Forest Service wood handbook explains what finishes can and cannot do.

The part that decides whether the file works

Everything above is text. That means the file questions are letterform questions, and there are three that matter more than the rest. We draw these packs, so this is the side of the job we actually know.

A counter has to be a real hole. The middle of an O, the loop of an e, the triangle inside an A: in a correctly built file those are subtracted from the letter, so the shape is one compound path with holes in it. In a badly built file they are separate white shapes sitting on top, which looks identical on screen and behaves completely differently at the machine. Cutting both contours can produce the same physical ring as a compound letter. Fill engraving depends on how the importer interprets the objects and assigned operations; the white overlay may not subtract the underlying fill. If you open a file and a counter can be clicked and dragged away on its own, that is the tell. Our post on quote SVGs for signs covers the related mechanical problem of counters that drop out of a cut-through sign.

Script has to stay connected. Handwritten and brush styles work by flowing one letter into the next, and the point where they join is always the thinnest part of the design. If those joins are thin enough to tear, a vinyl sign falls apart during weeding rather than at the machine, which is the most frustrating possible moment to discover it. In a pack built properly, the script is merged into one continuous outline instead of a stack of overlapping letters, so there are no cut lines running through the overlaps. Our vinyl weeding guide covers how to rescue what you have already cut.

Weight beats delicacy at distance. A sign over a washer is read from the doorway. A coffee bar plaque is read from across the kitchen. Letter height alone does not establish legibility. Stroke width, contrast, wording and the room’s lighting matter together. A hairline script that looks elegant at full zoom turns into a grey smudge at six feet.

The free check costs a sheet of paper. Print the design at finished size, tape it where the sign will hang, and walk back to where a person would actually stand. If you squint, the design needs a heavier weight, fewer words, or a stronger size difference between the main line and the supporting lines.

Stocking all three

If you are choosing where to start, pick one room and go deep rather than making one sign for each. A buyer who stops at a coffee bar sign will look at the coffee canister labels next to it. That same buyer walks straight past a laundry sign, because they came in thinking about their coffee corner.

Once one room is selling, the second is nearly free to add. The projects are the same shapes on the same materials, and the sayings do the work of making them different products. Our guide to kitchen and BBQ projects covers the neighbouring room if you want to expand along the counter rather than into the laundry.

The coffee, bar, and laundry packs sit in quotes and text and food and home. Every pack is $3.99, downloads as SVG, PNG, JPG, PDF, and EPS, and includes a commercial license with no cap on the physical signs you make and sell.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big should a coffee bar sign be?

Most coffee stations sit on a counter or a shelf and get read from about six to eight feet away, across a kitchen. Use a full-size paper proof at the intended viewing distance; letter shape, contrast and lighting all affect legibility. The more common mistake is cramming too many words onto a small board, which forces every stroke thinner.

Will a wooden sign survive a laundry room?

Laundry rooms swing between humid and dry every time a dryer runs, and bare wood moves with that. A suitable finish on both faces and the edges slows moisture exchange but does not guarantee a flat plaque, and vinyl on a painted or primed board handles the room better than vinyl straight onto raw timber, which can lift at the edges.
